This
captivating area just
forty kilometres north
of Elliston comprises
limestone caves with
a granite rock face

most accessible, dramatic
and beautiful coastal
scenery in South Australia.
Cliffs, caves, crevasses,
blowholes and beaches
abound. So do wildflowers,

with kangaroos and emus
being the permanent
residents. Be sure to
take your camera and
binoculars. Cape Carnot
is believed to be the
oldest rock in South
Australia - at more
than 2000 million years
old. Entry permits are

outlets around Port
Lincoln.

HAYSTACKS

is a collection of huge
wind- worn pink granite
boulders - estimated
to be more than 1500
million years old. The
phenomena occurs forty
kilometres southeast
of Streaky Bay and is
explained by interpretive
signs near the car park

driving access to these
bizarre outcrops.
POINT
LABATT
Situated
around fifty-five kilometres
south of Streaky Bay,
Point Labatt has the
only permanent colony
of sea lions on the
Australian mainland.
SIR
JOSEPH BANKS GROUP
OF ISLANDS
This
is a marine wonderland
named after that famous
British botanist who
sailed with Captain
Cook. Farms were set
up on some islands.
Others remain important
breeding grounds for
Cape Barren Geese and
the nature lover can
spot sea lions, cormorants
and terns darting after
the fish which fill
the waters.

FLINDERS
LOOKOUT
Renamed
after the pioneering
navigator, this spot
offers views across
the eastern part of
the city and on clear
days Port Pirie - some
thirty kilometres away
- can be glimpsed across
the Gulf.
HUMMOCK
HILL LOOKOUT
This
hill, developed by BHP
was the site of the
first settlement at
the turn of last century.
It saw service as a
gun battery and observation
post during World War
II and today provides
outstanding views of
the city, its foreshore
and the distant southern
finders Ranges.
MOUNT
LAURA HOMESTEAD MUSEUM

much local history.
A 1920s BHP worker's
cottage, Blacksmiths
workshop and engine
shed containing more
than 50 stationary engines

POINT
LOWLY
Just
twenty minutes from
Whyalla, Point Lowly
gives beautiful views
of the Gulf and southern
Flinders Ranges. Two
kilometres past the
Santos works at Port
Bonyithon is the Point
Lowly Lighthouse, built
in 1883. The coast is
frequented by dolphin
and birdlife and the
shoreline is popular
for fishing.

MARITIME MUSEUM

first ship built at
the Whyalla Ship yard
in 1941. The city's
important shipping past
is captured in photos

PARK

MOUNT
WUDINNA ROCK
This
is the largest granite
monolith in the region,
standing 261 metres
high, and offering panoramic
views and wildflowers
in spring. The clumps
of weathered granite
have formed intriguing
shapes. such as nearby
Turtle Rock.
